Tree fall in Shrewsbury Street

The heavy rains of Diamond Jubilee Sunday, not only dampened celebrations across the nation, but they also brought down a tree partly blocking Shrewsbury Street in Hodnet.

The fall, which happened around lunchtime, occurred in the grounds of Hodnet Hall but the top of the tree fell across the wall blocking the footpath and part of the road. We understand that tree was removed within a couple of hours.

Had this had happened on another day than the Jubilee weekend, it would have very probably disrupted traffic through the village for some time.

Discounted prices on water butts

Shropshire Council is offering discounted prices on water butts. According to a report here on Shropshire Newsroom, the  Council and their contractors Veolia are working in partnership with UK plastics manufacturer Straight plc. to offer residents discounts on purchasing water butts. Details and prices are on the getcomposting website. Water butts are at present available in 100 & 190 litre versions, both are supplied complete with stands and downpipe diverter kits. Both versions currently have a “buy one and get a second half price” offer available.
The getcomposting website, as its name suggests, also offers discounts on different types of composting equipment. However, we suggest that you check prices from other suppliers rather than assuming that single water butts and compost bins offer the best value.

Market Drayton Swimming Centre to re-open

Shropshire Council have today announced that Market Drayton Swimming Centre is to re-open next Wednesday (6th June). In a story here they describe the work which has been done over the last three months. The pool closed on 12th March for an expected two weeks.
As we reported here there are two free swimming schemes available at the moment. Free public swimming is available on Tuesdays (check for session times) and the British Gas Free Swim promotion allows one adult and two children to swim for free on any day (subject to timetabling) on two occasions up to the end of June.
The centre’s own website has details of opening times, but at the time of posting this article is only hopeful that the facility will reopen on Wednesday.
