A41 Closed After Crash (7/9/16)

Update: The A41 has now been reopened. This afternoon West Midland Police have appealed here for information about the incident. They ask:

Police would like to here from anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the collision or seen either vehicle in the events leading up to it.
If you have any information please call police on 101, quoting incident number 809s of 6 September.

Residents may have noticed additional traffic through Hodnet today. The reason is that the A41 between Tern Hill and Prees Heath remains closed after a crash at Sandford yesterday evening. According to Radio Shropshire and ITV News the reason for the extended closure is to enable the cleaning up of an oil spillage.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service report being called to a road traffic collision involving one van and one estate car. One person was trapped and extricated by fire fighters using Holmatro rescue equipment. They were taken to hospital by ambulance along with another two casualties. Four fire appliances, including the Rescue Tender, were mobilised from Prees, Wellington and Whitchurch along with an Operations Officer. The initial call was received at 21:21 and they were at the scene until approximately 23:02.
According to Shropshirelive.com a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said:

“The driver of the car was the most serious. The man, estimated to be in his 20s, had suffered multiple injuries. Working with firefighters, it took about an hour and a half to extricate him due to the damage to the vehicle and his injuries. “He was immobilised, had a pelvic binder put in place and had his leg splinted before being taken on blue lights to the major trauma centre at Royal Stoke University Hospital.
“The front seat passenger, a woman who was estimated to be in her late teens had also suffered multiple injuries and after treatment at the scene was taken to the same hospital by an ambulance travelling on blue lights.
“The man driving the van had managed to get out of the vehicle himself. He had some facial lacerations and ankle pain. After assessment, he was taken to Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.”

At present there is no information available indicating when the A41 is expected to reopen. The signed diversion seems to be directing traffic along the A53 to Espley Roundabout, then through Hodnet northwards up the old A442 to the B5065, before rejoining the A41 (or vice-versa).
Extra traffic is also using this route as the A41 continues to be the official diversion for the ongoing day-time closure of the A529 between Adderley and Audlem.

Hay Fire Thought to be Deliberate

Update: 8 September
SFRS have today published advice to farmers on fire prevention, especially in regard to the storage of hay. They state that in the last ten days they have attended ten incidents involving bales of straw on fire!
Some of the incidents involve large quantities of hay, with 450 bales of straw on fire at Crudginton (pictured), 300 tonnes of straw near Hodnet (below) and 250 bales of hay smouldering in Nescliffe.
The advice then goes on to quote the NFU Risk Management Programme which gives advice on the risk of spontaneous combustion in stored hay. For any non-farmers reading this hay which is too wet will go through a curing process (sometimes referred to as a sweat) in storage where heat is produced. It is a build up of this heat which causes baled hay to spontaneously catch fire. Depending on the type and size of bales, a safe moister content level should as low as 16% in certain circumstances and never above 20%. Commonly, over moist hay will set it self alight within two weeks of being stacked, but the danger has been observed to extend for two months.
The advice can be read in full here.
