Medical Centre Telephone Problems

Patients trying to telephone Hodnet Medical Centre recently have needed plenty of patience, as a fault has made it impossible to get through. A technical problem has caused calls to be rerouted to Shropdoc where the answering service has advised them that they are closed and people should dial their GP direct!
Today the Medical Centre has published the following apology on its website’s home page:

13 Nov 2017 – Telephone system failure

Hodnet Medical Centre would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by our recent telephone system failure on Friday 10th November 2017 and again this morning Monday 13th November 2017. Please be assured that we are working very closely with BT to resolve the issue as a matter of urgency.
If we hear the problem has been fixed we will add a note here.

Further delays with roadworks?

Roadworks SignAs most local people know roadworks at Espley Roundabout are causing delays and confusion.
Two pieces of information which may cause further difficulties today (11 Nov. 2017) will be of interest to local residents.
On Friday evening Diversion signs were put out on the A442 through Peplow. The signs direct traffic in both directions. Whilst this author is unclear exactly where the diversion is from to, the most logical is that for some portion of the day the A53 from the roundabout towards Shawbury will be closed. If you are planning to travel in that direction, be prepared for delays. Alternatively, it could be a diversion around a road closure in the Telford area. If so the extra traffic will add to congestion at Espley Roundabout.
Secondly, Shropshire Council have announced here the closure of the B5065, Soulton Road, between Wem and the A49 between 7.30am and 1.00pm today. This is to allow the recovery of a HGV went off the road at Soulton Bridge on Thursday afternoon. The recovery has been delayed by the difficulty of not damaging the bridge which is a Grade II listed structure.
Wherever you are going over the weekend, it seems you need to be prepared for delays.

FOUND – Dog Missing from Marchamley

A big thank you from Helen to all who helped in the search for Spyder and expressed their support and concern.
Spyder was spotted in a lane about a mile away and was back home by this evening, with no ill effects. Helen says that social media really helped.

Spider who went missing on 5 Nov. 2017Have you seen Spyder (photograph) a liver and white Springer Spaniel who went missing from her home in Marchamley last night (5/11/17)?
Despite being virtually deaf, Spyder was spooked by fireworks at around 7.00pm and fled her kennel. She has not returned home this morning.
If you see Spyder, or know of her whereabouts, please contact Helen on 01630-685375 or 07971-688340 as soon as possible.

More Roadworks on A53 – Nov. 2017

Roadworks SignWith two weeks of roadworks due to start on Tuesday (7/11/17) at Espley Roundabout, Roadworks.org have twice sent out email alerts about two further sets of works on the A53. One word of warning, this author has tried to follow the links to the items on the their website and in each case the result “The item does not exist” is displayed. It seems wise however to pass the information on so local residents are forewarned.
The first of these alerts reads:

Distraction Thefts

West Mercia Police LogoWest Mercia Police have warned residents to beware of distraction thefts by unexpected visitors. In a report on their website about an incident in Ellerdine, they also ask for information about the theft from a home in Heath Lane which took place last Tuesday (31 Oct. 2017) at about 10:30am.
The report states:

The victim, a man in his 90s, has received a knock at the door by an unknown man, he has then been distracted by the offender who has entered the property. He has then made an excuse and then left the victim and driven off in a white van. It is not until some time later the same day, the victim has noticed that his wallet and driving licence has been stolen.
The the offender is described as white man, between 45 – 50 years of age, medium build and wearing casual clothing.
A secondary incident also took place the following day (Thursday, 2 November), in which a woman in her 80s interrupted a potential burglary, when she discovered an unknown man in her home. She has later realised that her purse has gone.
Officers believe these two incidents are linked.
Detective Sergeant Jonathan Taylor of Telford CID said, “We’d like to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour or activity in the area at the time. I’m also asking local communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.
“When leaving your property for any reason, whether it is going into the garden or talking to a neighbour within the area, residents are advised to ensure all windows and doors are locked, to prevent opportunist thieves entering the property.”

The report also provides a list of what people can do to protect themselves from becoming victims of distraction theft. These are:

  • check to see who is at the door by using your door viewer, or looking through a front window
  • always put the chain on before you open the door as this is a barrier against unwanted callers
  • when an unexpected caller claims they work for one of the utility companies, they must be able to quote your password and unique customer number and produce an identity card: all of the utility companies operate password schemes – contact the customer services department and set up a password with them
  • make a note of your customer number, which can be found at the top of the utility bill and keep it handy – this number is unique to your household
  • as added proof of identity, genuine trades people should carry an identification card with their photograph on -check this carefully and keep the chain on
  • if you’re unsure about the caller’s identity telephone the company the caller claims to represent, but don’t rely on them giving you the number as it may be false – genuine callers won’t mind waiting
  • if you’re still unsure, ask the caller to come back later so that you can arrange for a friend or relative to be present

Hodnet WorkoutIt seems that, unlike city people, Hodnet residents being of a gentler character have found the thought of a fitness Bootcamp far too intimidating! Following feedback received at the recent Healthy Hodnet event, Emily Benson of Beyond Fitness has changed the name and altered the approach of her weekly workouts. From now on they will be known as Hodnet Body Tone Workouts, but they still take place on Thursday mornings starting at 9:15am on Hodnet Recreation Ground.
Emily says “The new look Hodnet workout is here! There’s still 8 weeks left until Christmas and plenty of time to get fit. Everyone who signs up for a block booking will be entered into a raffle to win a free 45 minute PT session. I promise lots of fun!”
