Next Footpaths Group walk: Sunday 26th May

Hodnet Footpaths Group have arranged another walk, and we hope that some of you might be able to join us. Details are as follows:
Sunday 26th May, meet at Lyon Hall car park for an 11 am start. We intend to walk up to Marchamley via the new footpath, then back down the Hearne to Hodnet. This should take about an hour (approx 3 miles). Dogs on leads are welcome, but larger dogs may need a hand over the stiles. Sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are advisable.
Please feel free to bring friends along – we aim to see our local paths well-maintained and enjoyed by as many people as possible.

Hodnet & District Garden Club – May 2013

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 21st May at the Lyon Hall, when we welcome back Bryan Howard.
Bryan has been working with plants for most of his life. A student at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, followed by a spell at Kew’s Wakehurst Place in Sussex, he has been a horticultural advisor for Shropshire Council and for the past twenty-five years has been assisting with Radio Shropshire’s gardening programme.  He is currently a plant advisor for Dobbies Garden Centres.
With all this knowledge to share, we should enjoy a very interesting talk on
Pond Renovations’, where he will discuss pond materials, safety measures, range of aquatic and associated plants, containers and appropriate perimeter plants.  Every garden should have some sort of water feature, small or large, to add interest and dimension, as well as the benefits to wildlife.
HODNET & DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB meet every month on the third Tuesday at the Lyon Hall, 7:30pm. Visitors are most welcome to come along to any of our talks and partake in a cup of tea and biscuit. Entry fee for guests is £2.00 per person, or why not join our club? It’s only £12 for a whole year.

Easter Monday Walk a success

As you’ll see from the photo, there was a good turn-out for the Easter Monday walk organised by the Footpath Group. In fact 14 people and 5 dogs braved the bracing wind and enjoyed a refreshing walk following the route detailed in our second leaflet, concluding the morning’s activity with a drink at The Bear.

Thanks to the organisers, and do keep on supporting our activities. It’s very motivating to walk with a group – it saves you worrying about getting lost, and is a great way to get to know the local area as well as the other walkers!

Hodnet and District Garden Club

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 16th April, and the subject is ‘Violas’.
We extend a warm welcome to ex-members Jack Willgoss and Laura Crowe. Jack and Laura left us in 2011 to open Wildegoose Nursery, specialists in Violas, and now located in the walled garden of Millichope estate in Shropshire. Violas can be striped, splashed and blotched, bi-coloured or the image of simplicity itself. Many are wonderfully scented too so there is something to please everyone, and with a flowering season stretching from March to October they are hard to beat.
Why not come along and hear all about these wonderful little treasures and hopefully see Viola ‘Janette’ and Viola ‘Jean Jeannie’, two new introductions from Wildegoose.
EVERYONE WELCOME

Hodnet and District Garden Club Meeting March 2013

The next meeting of Hodnet and District Garden Club is on Tuesday 19th March at 7.30 pm in the Lyon Hall, Hodnet.
Our guest speaker for this month is Martin Ford.  Some of you may know Martin from his participation in the Radio Shropshire’s Garden Phone In programme that he has been involved with since 1985.  He has also been teaching horticulture since 1968.  With all his knowledge and experience as an allotment holder in Shrewsbury, his talk on Modern Techniques in Vegetable Growing should be informative and instructive in order to help us grow healthy food for our busy lives.
New members always welcome. For more information, contact our Secretary Kathryn Sutherland on 01952 550869

Garden Club meeting February 2013

The bulbs are showing in our gardens, a sign that Spring is just around the corner, which means a busy time for gardeners. So why not come along to The Hodnet and District Garden Club on Tuesday 19th February at the Lyon Hall at 7:30p.m. to hear Jim Almond give a talk on Propagation –- Life or Death?
Jim is back by popular demand as his talks are always fascinating and informative, plus his photography is remarkable. With our budgets on the squeeze we need to learn how to multiply our plants at little or no cost.
New members always welcome. For more information, contact our Secretary Kathryn Sutherland on 01952 550869.
