It's on – Footpath Group – Evening Walk – 7th July

Rain not forecast, so we are going for it
Members of Hodnet Footpath Group invite anyone to join them on a summer’s evening [It’s got to start soon hasn’t it?] walk.
We shall be walking from Hodnet towards Fauls and back, using parts of the route outlined in our Walk Leaflet 6.
This is a varied walk of moderate exertion, which also includes nice views.
Children and dogs welcome – but dogs on a lead please.
The walk starts from the Lyon Hall at 7.30 pm, return expected around 9 – 9.30 pm.
Sensible footwear and clothing advised.
If raining, it will be cancelled and re-run the following week on Thursday 16th, same time, etc. If in doubt on the 7th, visit this website post an hour beforehand to check for a ‘no go’ announcement.

Permissive Path – Help with Q'aire

Shropshire Council (SC), who built the permissive path between Hodnet and Marchamley are seeking some quick/simple feedback from local residents/users.
Although the form asks for responses by end of Feb, SC will look to collect/collate them by 5th March.
A supply of forms is being placed in the village store and post office, which SC encourage people to complete and then hand back in [for later collection by SC]. Alternatively, you can print or download a copy here and either complete it by hand, and hand it in at the collecting points in the village or send it direct to SC via email.

Help the Footpath Group

On 19th Feb, at 7.30pm, our group will be meeting at The Bear Inn, Hodnet.
We’ve been running for 5 yrs now; during which time we’ve received good feedback on our local walk leaflets and improvements we’ve made to some local paths – but to keep it up we need help.
If you like walking, maybe just exercising the dog rather than epic hikes, then please consider coming along and joining our small, friendly and mixed group of like-minded people.
You can ‘join’ our group in full (attend meetings and help as much or as little as you like/feel able) or as a ‘friend’ (simply be e-mailed information on our group walks). Either way, there’s no fuss in doing so and ‘membership’ is free.

Enjoy a Spring Walk

After our warm Easter, it really feels like spring is finally with us, so we are hoping the weather will be kind for our next (HFG) organised walk on Monday 4th May 2015. It will be a repeat of what was planned at Xmas, but which had to be cancelled due to poor weather.
We shall be walking from Hodnet to Marchamley and back via the route shown in local Walk Leaflet 3, with a extension via Wollerton (part of Leaflet 2) for those who wish to carry on further, returning to Hodnet via the old railway line.
This is an interesting walk, requiring only moderate exertion, which includes nice views and a varied range of terrain/countryside.
Children and dogs [dog friendly route] all welcome – but dogs on a lead please.
The walk starts from the Lyon Hall at 10.30 AM, return expected between 12.00 for the shorter portion, and 13.00 via Wollerton. Either way, you should be back in time for a drink or lunch at The Bear!
Sensible footwear and clothing advised.
Cancelled if really pouring with rain, but if in doubt visit website an hour beforehand for a ‘go/no go’ announcement.

Final dog access gate installed

At the weekend, on the only day it has rained for weeks -how do we choose them? a few hardy souls from the footpath group installed the last of the three planned dog gates on the route from Hodnet to Long Lane (Hodnet Walks 2).
In line with the claim on the reprinted leaflets about to hit the streets, this will make the whole of Walk 2 ‘dog friendly’.
They say that practice makes perfect, and our Mk III gate has undoubtedly evolved from our earlier attempts – we like it and we hope that users do too.
Here are some photos.

Wollerton Wetlands – good news

Although legal/practical access to the Wetlands was established earlier this year, a decade of lack of access/neglect meant that parts of the original paths around it had become overgrown and nettle infested.
Shropshire Council’s Outdoor Recreation dept recently arranged for a work party from the Probation Service to heavily strim and cut back vegetation around the site, and the route is now transformed, see pictures below.

A circular walk is now very easy, and further visits are planned through the year to uncover the original chipping paths.
The more people use the paths the clearer they will remain, so if you’ve not been before, why not try it now?
Maybe you’ll see some of its special wildlife, as below.

This event is 'on' Something different for a Wednesday Eve?

UPDATE – BIT MORE CLOUD THAN RECENTLY, BUT DRY SO FAR – SO LET’S GIVE IT A GO!

Wednesday, mid-week and what to do?
Maybe you’re fed up with summertime telly? Tired of the kids twittering/facebooking? Dog keeps looking at you expectantly!
Then why not join a short evening country walk, which has been organised by the Hodnet Footpath Group for Wed 30th July.
We leave The Lyon Hall at 7pm [free parking] and expect to be back by 9pm. Our route will take us over a mix of paths, tracks and lanes to/from Marchamley Wood – total distance about 5 miles.
Sensible footwear required, dogs [on leads where necessary] and kids welcome.
If the weather is terrible the walk will be cancelled, but if in doubt check the website after 5pm for a ‘Go/No Go’ announcement!
If you want more info see the contacts listed on this website’s groups page Here

Hodnet – Marchamley path repaired

The permissive path, part washed away by torrential rain earlier this year, has now been repaired by Shropshire Council.
Now that this is done, in the near future the vegetation at the sides of the path is due to be cut back and some routine weed spraying will then take place.
It is hoped that this action will encourage past, and new, users to make the most of this valuable facility.
Anyone who discovers future problems with this path, or who has any comments/suggestions to make concerning it, should contact the Parish Council.

Glow Worm Spotting is on!

WEATHER A BIT TOUCH AND GO TODAY, BUT LET’S GIVE IT A GO. SEE YOU 10PM

Hodnet’s glow worms along our section of the old railway line are locally well known, but nationally scarce.
Have you ever seen them?
If not, and assuming you’d like to, would you know what you are looking for, or exactly where?
If yes, perhaps you’d like to repeat the experience?
Either way, the simplest way to see them is to join a late evening trip being organised by members of the Hodnet Footpath Group, as per their notice below:
We plan to walk along the old railway line between
Hodnet and Wollerton on the evening of Friday 27th June,
meeting by the ex council yard (old auction yard) in Station
Road, Hodnet [opposite the entrance to Websters Lane] ready
for a 10.00 pm [2200 hrs] start.
Everyone is welcome to join us.
Two cautions:
1. Please note – if it is raining, the event will be
cancelled.
2. Please read the safety notes below:
THIS IS A WALK IN THE DARK OVER UNEVEN GROUND,
AND A TORCH, SENSIBLE CLOTHING AND STURDY FOOTWEAR
ARE ESSENTIAL.
ANY CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING ANY ESSENTIAL MEDICATION.
Hodnet Footpath Group can not accept any liability for
loss of or damage to property [inc clothing and personal
effects] Looking forward to seeing you on 27th

Easter Visit to the Wetlands

Following the success of the introductory Xmas walk down the new path from Wollerton to the bypass Wetlands, the Hodnet Footpath Group has arranged a further public walk.
If you are simply curious to see the Wetlands and/or would like to walk to Helshaw Grange in the countryside beyond, please come and join us on Easter Monday – 21st April 2014.
We’ll meet at 11.00 AM by the Village Room on Mill Road, Wollerton – Where the bridge club meets, not the social/bowls club.
As an alternative you can walk to the meeting point from Hodnet itself, via the old railway line – meet at 10.30 AM by the old railway bridge on Station Road, Hodnet.
Allow around 1.5 hrs for the Wetlands part of the walk & 1/2 hour extra each way if walking to/from Hodnet.
If you are driving to Wollerton, please park on the road by the Village Room – do not park on the private drive leading into Wollerton ‘Old Yard’.
No special gear is required, but sensible footwear advised plus a drink/snack – as required. Accompanied children and dogs welcome – dogs on a lead please.
