Shropshire Libraries reopen after Lockdown 2 Dec 2020

Libraries in Shropshire have once again opened their doors following the end of the latest national lockdown.

This means that customers will be able to go into their libraries to browse and to borrow library items. Access to library computers will also be available on an advance booking basis by contacting the relevant library.

All the required COVID-19 safety measures are in place, including quarantining of returned library items, altered layouts to enable social distancing, and limits on the numbers of people allowed in each library at the same time. Customers are required to wear a face covering and are asked to comply with NHS Test and Trace requirements.

With safety remaining a priority, library events and activities aren’t being reintroduced just yet, but in the meantime a couple of the most popular regular library events have moved online. Rhyme Time and Story Time sessions are now being run live every week via Zoom and you can get your invite by emailing shrewsbury.library@shropshire.gov.uk. Rhyme Times are on Mondays at 10.30am and Story Times are on Wednesdays at 10.30am.

Further details about the reopening of libraries can be found at www.shropshire.gov.uk/libraries.

Shropshire libraries operating ‘Ready Reads’ click & collect service

Although library branches are closed due to the current lockdown restrictions, Shropshire Libraries are pleased to be offering Ready Reads, a ‘click & collect’ style service offering tailored book choices selected by library staff.

To use Ready Reads customers can complete an online form that includes questions about what sort of books are preferred. Based on that information library staff will put together selections of books then contact the customer once they’re ready to collect.

The form is available on the library webpages .Alternatively the service can be accessed by telephoning one of the participating libraries.

As well as Ready Reads library customers can also take advantage of an extensive range of e-books and e-audiobooks, plus online magazines and newspapers. These can be accessed here.

Please check Shropshire Council’s  library webpages for full details.

Summer holiday activity programme offers fun for all the family

Shropshire Council has developed a timetable of activities to help make the summer holidays fun for all the family.

The programme offers a mixture of face-to-face participation and self-led sessions for children and families to enjoy together  – all in line with social distancing guidance.

There is involvement from Severn Valley Country Park, Shropshire Libraries, Junior Wild Teams and other council service areas. For more information click here to visit  the Shropshire Council website – a full list of activities is due to be added on Monday, 20 July.

Meanwhile Shropshire Family Information Service also has information on other summer holiday activities from some of the wonderful family attractions opening back up throughout Shropshire. This can be accessed via their free online directory of summer holiday fun.

For some families, who may need full-time care at a registered childcare provider, a holiday play scheme or an out of school club, Shropshire Family Information Service also has a full list of registered childcare providers. For information parents can call telephone 01743 254400 or email ShropshireFIS@shropshire.gov.uk

Shropshire Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge

Shropshire Libraries are inviting children across the county to sign-up for a seriously silly summer with this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at primary school aged children and encourages them to keep reading over the summer holidays.

This year the theme is Silly Squad and is all about funny books, happiness and having a laugh with characters created by award-winning children’s author and illustrator, Laura Ellen Anderson.

The Challenge this year has moved online and, as always, it is free to sign up.

Participants will need the email address and permission of a parent or carer to register and set up their reading profile. Once they have done this, it’s time to get reading!

Children can set their own reading goal, rate and review their books and unlock activities and rewards as they progress. When their reading goal is reached they can download and print a certificate.

The website also features video content, games, quizzes, digital and downloadable activities to get children excited about taking part in the Challenge at home.

The Silly Squad Summer Reading Challenge runs until 12 September 2020 and was created by the Reading Agency.

Shropshire Libraries are running a limited service from their buildings but there are lots of services you can access from home. To find silly books or magazines to read take a look at their e-library. You can also order and collect up to 10 books per person from your library through their free Ready Reads Collect service.

Any questions? Contact at libraries@shropshire.gov.uk or visit the Shropshire Libraries website https://shropshire.gov.uk/libraries/

Parents and Carers can also rise to the challenge by joining Shropshire Summer Reads. Registering for the challenge is easy – just visit Shropshire Libraries’ website to find a simple joining form.  Completed entries will be entered in a prize draw for book vouchers, kindly funded by library Friends groups and redeemable at independent book shops across Shropshire.

E-library at your fingertips

Although Shropshire Libraries are currently closed, they are working hard to improve their online resources.

Shropshire Libraries have a great selection of e-resources readily available at your fingertips from e-books and e-audio to e-magazines, e-newspapersCommunity Directory to even Shropshire Libraries Facebook Book Group.

If you aren’t a library member it’s easy to join online.

For more information, visit Shropshire Libraries website.

Happy Reading!

Free Theatre for All! (From the comfort and safety of home!)

To celebrate World Theatre Day (today, Friday 27 March 2020), Pentabus Theatre (national rural theatre company, based in Ludlow) today announced that they are going to release recordings of their past shows on their website and social media channels to be streamed for free.

These will remain live for the next three months, and will be released weekly on a Friday at 2pm for anyone to access.

The first production to be released was “Here I Belong” by Matt Hartley today, with other shows to follow including “Crossings” by Deirdre Kinahan and “Each Slow Dusk” by Rory Mullarkey.

The recordings will be accompanied by social media Q&As with cast and creative teams from the productions, details of which will be announced via social media.

Pentabus were the first company to live stream theatre directly from village halls into homes and community spaces across the world. All recordings are high quality and filmed during live streams or as part of a live capture over the past five years.

They realise that a lot of their audience will be stuck in their houses in rural communities and want to give everyone the chance to go to the virtual village hall and experience excellent theatre from the comfort of their own home.
