Next HFG Walk – 6th August 2024

Our next organised public walk is on Tuesday August 6th, starting at 10.00 a.m.

We will be walking the route of Hodnet Walk 6 ‘Hodnet to Fauls, the “Two Parishes Walk’

This is one of our longer circular walks – of about 8 miles and with lots of stiles. Taking 3-4 hours, there are some fine views as you pass through the surrounding varied countryside.

Meet at The Lyon Hall Hodnet (free parking, or also along Hearne Lane opposite), we will walk up Hearne Lane and walk across fields to Long Lane, then to Wood Lane and on to Fauls.

Note. If you wish to do a shorter route (3m) you could car share and leave a car parked on the roadside at Fauls Church.

From Fauls we walk along Mickley Lane to Upper Mickley then start  heading back across fields towards Moat Farm on Wood Lane, after which we head back to Long Lane and retrace our steps to Hodnet.

For those interested, we will taking some light refreshments at The Bear afterwards.

Everyone is welcome including dogs, on leads, as this is a dog friendly route. You can find the Walk 6 guide on our webpage https://hodnet.org.uk/main/index.php/tourism/local-walk-leaflets/

Annual Glow Worm Walk – 28th June

On the evening of Friday 28th June Hodnet Footpath Group (HFG) are holding our annual Glow Worm Walk – weather allowing*

This is a late evening ‘walk’ when we try to spot some of Hodnet’s rare glow worms.

These rare beetles can be found in the vegetation alongside the old railway line from Hodnet to Wollerton, where during their brief breeding season the females can be spotted ‘glowing’ to attract a mate.

Ideally a warm, dark and dry night is the best time to spot them from mid June to mid July. Unfortunately there is no guarantee of spotting them but most years we see at least a few and it’s always exciting when you do.

Glow worms are not actually worms at all; they are beetles! The fact that they spend most of their lives as larvae and the wingless, glowing adult females don’t look much like beetles, may be why they have such a misleading name

This year we are meeting at The Bear in Hodnet from 9 pm on and then making our way to the old Railway Line bridge on Station Road, Hodnet, ready for a 10.15 departure. Alternatively you can meet up at the bridge over the old railway line on Station Road, Hodnet, ready for a 10.30 pm start.

Children and dogs (on leads) welcome. Sensible shoes and clothing and a torch advised (for the homeward walk).

Any queries, or if you’d like to be added to our email list and receive direct info from us in future, please contact David Wilson on 07970 304169

*Note. In case of rain the event will be be cancelled and take place the following Friday 5th July.

June’s Walk – HFG

On 4th June we have our regular “First Tuesday” walk.

Derek Orton will be leading us on a new circular route around Stanton upon Hine Heath. It will be about 5miles/2 hours and combine quiet lanes, cross country and a bit alongside the river Roden. For those interested we will then adjourn to the Tiddly (Royal Oak) for refreshments.

Meet at the Lyon Hall car park in Hodnet for a 10.00 a.m. prompt departure and car sharing where possible. At Stanton we will park/congregate at Stanton Village Hall, Church Road, SY4 4NF.

Everyone is welcome, including dogs on leads, with stout footwear recommended. Any queries please contact Derek on 07360 631654 .

Views sought about proposed charges for garden waste collections

Householders in the Shropshire Council area are being asked for their views on proposals to introduce a charge for the collection of garden waste – and about proposals for the future operation of the council’s five Household Recycling Centres (HRCs).

six-week consultation runs from Tuesday 9 April to Monday 20 May 2024.

Shropshire Council is proposing to introduce an annual subscription fee of £52 – the equivalent of £1 a week – to collect garden waste from properties in the Shropshire Council area.

The consultation asks people if they would be willing to pay more than £52 a year if the additional money was used to keep all five HRCs open, and for views on whether the opening times of some recycling centres could be reduced.

The consultation also asks for people’s thoughts about a new permit/booking system for people visiting a recycling centre, to help ensure that they are only used by people from Shropshire.

The proposals are being made as Shropshire Council must make £62m of savings in 2024/25 to keep a balanced budget.

Charging for garden waste collections, and closing two of the council’s five Household Recycling Centres, are among proposals approved by councillors as part of Shropshire Council’s budget cuts for 2024/25.

While garden waste collections in Shropshire are currently free, 80% of English councils already charge for this service, and many have been doing so for several years. The average annual fee across the country is £55 a year.
